Discover how data center design consultants enhance efficiency and ensure structural integrity with gbc engineers.
The Role of Data Center Design Consultants

Data center design consultants are industry specialists who plan, coordinate, and execute the technical design of mission-critical infrastructure. Unlike conventional commercial buildings, data center facilities must:
- Operate 24/7 without fail
- Handle significant structural and thermal loads
- Prioritize both redundancy and resilience
- Integrate cutting-edge cooling, electrical, and fire protection systems
- Meet strict standards for uptime (e.g., Uptime Tier III or IV, EN 50600)
In the rapidly evolving data center industry, these consultants provide essential services that ensure the highest levels of reliability, safety, and efficiency.
At gbc engineers, our multidisciplinary approach delivers comprehensive design services tailored to each project’s unique requirements. We collaborate closely with our clients to provide:
- Structural engineering (steel, reinforced concrete, precast, and hybrid systems)
- BIM modeling and clash detection for seamless coordination
- Foundation design and geotechnical support
- Seismic and fire resilience analysis
- Construction phasing and prefabrication planning
- Sustainability consulting using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools
- Compliance with both local and international codes
This integrated methodology empowers our clients to optimize performance at every stage—from concept to commissioning—resulting in durable, future-proof facilities that meet the highest standards in the data center industry.
Maximizing Structural Integrity in Data Center Construction
Structural integrity is the backbone of a reliable data center facility. Whether a site is supporting 100 server racks or a 32 MW hyperscale campus, it must be engineered to withstand extreme conditions while protecting the essential technology housed within.
At gbc engineers, our expert team ensures each structure is built to last, safeguard critical operations, and support long-term growth.
1. Heavy Live and Dead Loads
Data centers are densely packed with equipment such as servers, batteries, chillers, and backup generators. These loads demand strong floor slabs, reinforced columns, and reliable load distribution systems. Our team evaluates:
- Point and distributed loads from IT equipment
- Dynamic loads from rotating machines (e.g. CRACs, UPS)
- Heavy rooftop loads from cooling towers and solar panels
These calculations are crucial for ensuring security and uptime across all infrastructure levels.
2. Vibration Sensitivity
Excessive vibrations can compromise technology performance and damage sensitive hardware. Using finite element modeling and vibration damping strategies, we minimize potential disruptions—especially in multistory or floating slab designs.
3. Resilience Against Natural Hazards
From earthquakes in Southeast Asia to wind loads in Europe, we design with worst-case scenarios in mind. Our solutions include:
- Base isolators or seismic joints
- Wind bracing and cross-laminated frames
- Fire-rated structural elements and escape strategies
4. Longevity and Maintainability
A mission-critical facility must operate for decades without frequent structural intervention. Our material selections and layout strategies emphasize low-maintenance durability, while also allowing for future upgrades, ensuring both security and adaptability.
Improving Efficiency Through Smart Design

Efficiency in a data center isn’t just about energy savings. It’s about designing smarter structures that reduce construction time, operating costs, and complexity.
Here’s how our data center design consultants drive efficiency through innovative methods and practical expertise:
1. Structural Optimization
Our experts optimize column grids, slab thicknesses, and beam depths to minimize material usage without compromising safety or stability. This intelligent structuring helps reduce:
- Material costs
- Construction time
- Embodied carbon footprint
2. Prefabrication & Modular Design
In today’s demanding business landscape, speed and precision are crucial. That’s why we incorporate precast concrete elements, modular steel frames, and platform systems, which enable:
- Faster on-site assembly
- Greater precision
- Fewer delays due to weather or labor shortages
In our FRA31 project, a 35,700 sqm hyperscale data center, we coordinated multiple prefabricated modules for office, generator, and cooling tower structures—reducing construction time by over 20%.
3. Integrated BIM Coordination
We use Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools like Revit and Navisworks to detect clashes early and streamline coordination between:
- Structural teams
- MEP engineers
- Architects
- Facility management teams
This reduces rework, delays, and budget overruns during the construction phase.
As a forward-thinking engineering company, gbc engineers regularly shares our insights through media, industry events, and partnerships across the business community. Our mission is to keep delivering smarter solutions that align with evolving demands in the global data center market.
A Global Perspective: Projects from Berlin to Southeast Asia
gbc engineers brings a unique edge to data center consulting with its international project portfolio. Some key examples include:
BER21
Location: Mittenwalde, Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany
Project Description:
Structural detailed design for the BER21 data center in Mittenwalde, Berlin. The low-rise design consists of two data centers BER21 A1 and A2. The data center campus is a 4.5-hectare site with a master plan for the construction of two buildings.
The entire object comprises approx. 14.900 sqm gross floor area.

BER22
Location: Berlin, Germany
Project Description:
The object to be designed is a new construction a low-rise data center from Vantage Data Centers. The low-rise design consists of a data center building with an adjacent yard and is located next to BER21.
The scope of this offer is the structure of the BER22. The building is about 82 m long, 79 m wide and 20 m high. The building consists of a ground floor, first floor and roof floor.
Each floor measures about 6m high. The main load bearing structure - floors, beams, columns and walls - is made of precast concrete elements. The foundation consists of single and strip foundations. Equipment supporting structures, e.g. the roof platform, are made from structural steel.
The entire object comprises approx. 18.000 sqm gross floor area.
